Product Cost Lead Engineer

Job Summary

The Product Cost Lead Engineer will assume responsibility for managing all sites product cost activities and act as a Global Product Costing lead. This involves developing, tracking, and reporting target product cost information for New Product Introduction projects for various product lines and also leading cost reduction activities for current products. The position holder will be the key enabler to achieve our ambitious cost targets on new and current products. The responsibilities will involve local and global projects.

This position provides the support on the product cost since the starting of the project to the final release, guaranteeing the company’s expected margins. Each decision influences the profitability of a component, of a platform or vehicle and therefore of the company. Cost reduction measures for margin improvement must be carried out responsibly.

This position reports directly to the Chief Technology Officer and work closely with the Program Managers and assumes a supervisory role as required.

Job responsibility

  • The focus of the position on POG profit optimization, cost analyses and savings
  • Establish product costs targets and ensure consistent tracking and reporting for New Product Introduction programs
  • Facilitate and drive cross-functional costing activities to ensure cost targets are met during NPI programs
  • Perform concept cost evaluation of modules, components, units in development process
  • Development of cost models for Purchasing “should costs”, make vs buy decisions and assessment of cost and feasibility for various manufacturing technologies
  • Manage current product cost reductions projects. This includes e.g. Benchmark and/or tear-down activities, competitive costs studies,
  • Increasing cost-awareness of the colleagues in the Design, Manufacturing and Purchasing departments contributing to the company’s success

Minimum Qualifacations

  • Knowledge of Product Development Process
  • Knowledge of value analysis and/or other cost reductions methods
  • Strong experience in the realization of product cost reductions
  • Expertise in cost evaluation/should cost analysis of technical parts, components and systems

 

  • Experience in manufacturing processes and materials
  • Experience in BOM management / BOM structures
  • Strong Experience on Product Cost Roll-up and analysis
  • Knowledge in costing tools such as Costing Templates, Siemens PPC, Apriori or similar
  • Basic Financial and Project Evaluation knowledge

Problem solving:

  • The job holder must question the profitability of each component and each function on the complex system
  • Must be well organized and need a disciplined and extremely methodic work method
  • Proposals for solutions and cost analyses must be comprehensible and realizable in short and long terms
  • The tasks must be scaled and scheduled according to priority; good time management and anticipatory work process planning are decisive
  • Reaching consensus and gaining the support of all participants for the successful implementation of the cost targets
  • Must be able to analyze problems and to determine, communicate and implement problem-solving ways and methods
  • Presentation techniques and analysis methods are necessary for creating cost-awareness and for communicating the consequences
  • Complex cost systems must be presented in a simplified way

Interpersonal skills

  • The job holder must be able to coordinate and lead cross-functional teams at POG
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to convey costing reports, new design/process suggestions in order to have alternatives to reduce costs
  • Ability to address and resolve issues in an objective, fact-based, professional fashion
  • Ability to inspire confidence in project sponsors, program leaders and core teams
  • Motivated self-starter who can relate well to a diverse multidiscipline development team

Qualifications and Experiences

  • Bachelors Degree in Mechanical, Electrical or Agricultural Engineering
  • 5 to 10 years of experience on Costing, Manufacturing or Purchasing Activities (preferably on Sheetmetal, Castings and Machining)
  • 5 years of experience with 3-D CAD system (i.e. Creo, Solidworks, Inventor, etc)
  • Manufacturing processes experience, Bill of Materials and knowledge of product cost structure preferred
  • Experience with Microsoft Office software (Proficiency with Excel is a must)
  • Excellent English communication (verbal and written)
